Dickenson County known as Virginia’s Baby was established in 1880.

Dickenson County Visitor’s Center welcomes visitors to the county. Located in the Town of Clintwood, the Visitor Center also houses the Dickenson County Chamber of Commerce and the Dr. Phipps Family Museum. Brochures, Rack cards, maps and other information may be obtained at the Visitor’s Center & Chamber of Commerce.

Dickenson County is abundant in outdoor activities and has a very rich heritage cultural. From mountain scenic drives offering some of the best views of the mountains in Virginia to hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching, horseback riding or motorcycling, you will find these and many more things to do in our county. Dickenson County is home to the Breaks Interstate Park, one of two interstate parks in the USA, John Flannagan Dam & Reservoir, Birch Knob Tower (a view of 5 states on a clear day), Virginia Scenic Rt. 611, Cumberland Mountain Scenic Drive, Cranesnest Hiking Biking and Horseback Trail and nearby campground, White Water Rafting during the first 4 weekends in October on the Virginia Scenic Russell Fork River, Trans America Bike Rt. (rt.76) , The Crooked Road, Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, Rivers to Ridges Artisan trail, The Ralph Stanley Museum & Traditional Music Center, Clinchco Coal Miners Memorial , the Veterans Memorial Walk of Honor in Haysi. and the World War I and II monument in the Town of Clintwood.

Some recent economic development projects include the consolidation of schools with a State-of-the–Art School (high & middle) and a Career Center under construction featuring a Sports Complex. The Haysi Ridgeview Trail (OHV/ATV) has recently been completed. A Sleep Inn Suites in Clintwood featuring 53 rooms recently opened. Shortly, construction will begin on a new industrial site at Red Onion to accommodate light and heavy industrial companies.
